"There is an attempt and a true way to treat IBS and other intestinal state or other invasive procedures: a low FODMAP diet," Vincent Pedre, MD, a health care specialist and medical director at Pedre Integrative Health, told.
FODMAP is a family of carbohydrate sugars and fibers that can exacerbate the IBS:
The acronym stands for Fermenting (the process through which the intestinal bacteria decompose the non-carbohydrate hydrates to produce gases such as hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide) Oligosaccharides (fructo-oligosacarides found in wheat, 'rye, onions and onions) and Galacto-oligosaccharide (found in legumes / pulses), Disaccharide (lactose found in milk, soft cheese and yogurts), Monosaccharide (fructose in excess of glucose, which is found in honey and many fruits and vegetables), and polyols (sugar polyols such as sorbitol and mannitol, found in some fruits and vegetables and used as artificial sweeteners).
It's a bite, but for severe IBS cases, low FODMAP diets can be a total game changer. Basically, the low FODMAP diet eliminates or aggressively lowers high-quality vegetables, high sugar fruits, legumes, dairy products and sugar alcohols for a specified period of time.
There are also some relevant studies to support this: "A study found that low FODMAP diet improves symptoms in about 68 to 76 per cent of patients with IBS – the results I have seen in my practice," Pedre said. Aside from IBS, the low FODMAP diet helps in various bowel conditions, including Crohn's disease, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and even small bacterial bacterial growth (SIBO). "
Despite the success of the low FODMAP diet, there are some important warnings. For one, it can be restrictive and difficult to follow properly (unless you have a useful guide to a low FODMAP diet). Plus, many people with IBS do not require such a restrictive diet in the long run. For people who benefit, Ped emphasizes that the goal should be the gradual reintroduction of FODMAP's healthy foods such as vegetables, legumes and fruits.
To increase your chances of success, Ped recommends keeping a diary for food. "Monitoring food intake is a great way to determine where high FODMAP foods and other food intolerances can be found, and [to help you] the goal of major offenders. "
