The final decision is expected in the next three years: creating a new project in the UEFA Champions League. The goal is to make the competition even more attractive to the public by 2024. This project is called the “Swiss model of champions” and came out as a counterpart to the project “European Super League” which continues to take shape.
They would go from 32 to 36 teams, and the first phase would have six groups of six members. This reform will take effect for the 2024-2025 season. According to the Times, the change is already ECA approved, an association of which the major European clubs are a part, which would challenge more obligations in the tournament of the most prestigious clubs. That would generate an increase in television rights and the box office. If the reform is approved, the teams will play a total of 17 matches.
Second group stage
Another option put on the table is the dispute over the second group stage, something that was done at the time, causing teams already classified to face off. six more duels instead of direct elimination as has been done so far.
Yet, UEFA’s preferred hypothesis is that of 36 teams divided into six groups. The top two would advance to eighth place, next to the top four third parties. In this way, every eleven will challenge a minimum of 10 obligations.
Changes in the leagues
If this renewal is approved, the local leagues with 20 clubs will have to stay with 18 in the first league. So, La Liga, English Premier League, Serie A in Italy, among others, they will have a mission to reconsider their tournament.
The draw was canceled in the second round
The classification was made with the teams that progressed. The first would meet the sixteenth, and so on. The classification will be determined according to the points obtained and the goals scored by each team in their respective group. In this way, match after match, they will have to fight to achieve a favorable result, unlike now when from previous dates, several have already sealed their passage to the quarterfinals. The semifinalists will be classified in the next edition of Champions. For their part, from 17 to 24 of the classification, they would continue to play in the Europa League.
