Columbus – Ohio State had a chance to celebrate positive development with Chase Young before practice.
Then the Bakians returned to work because they did not have their defensive end of the superstar completely back.
The latest uncertainty over the status of the junior captain was quickly resolved on Wednesday, though, allowing the team no. 2 in the nation to remove possible distraction, tighten focus on Rutgers trip – and prepare for Yang's return next week
"It's always exciting to come back with one of our brothers," said Ohio defensive end Tyler Friday. “You know, we missed it. Now is the time to finish the mission. We have to keep our heads straight.
"He's a warrior. He holds his head high, stays strong, supports, is a leader we ask to be off the field. It's great to have it around. "
The Haysman Trophy contender has stayed active with the Bakkies for the past few weeks, and he has been practicing even before the NFAA word that he will miss another match. Ohio State could have appealed the decision and tried to get Yang back in time for the Rutgers match, but both sides accepted the penalty for a loan issue he received from a family friend who repaid the summer.
The other factor Ohio State originally wanted to know? Did Yang actually want to fight the case so she could come back. And as soon as Bakiyas confirmed that confirmation from potential No. 1 overall pick NFL Draft next spring, he went to work to get it back as soon as possible.
"He was phenomenal," Smith said. "I asked him: We're really going to fight this, do you really want to come back? You know, let's not go to war if you want to check. He said: I want to go back. I want to play with my teammates.
"That right there just gave me more energy. … I think you all know that you don't become a captain here because of your talent. You become captain because of your character. So for me, this team has accepted Chase as a person. And because of that, it holds fast and I think it's going to hold fast. Chase is a big part of that. "
Now the Buckeyes know exactly when Chase Young will get to play the role. Another week, the mission will continue without him.
Ohio State Athletic Director Ein Smith and a small number of Bakisis met with the media Wednesday night to review the Rutgers game and to detail the return process for Chase Young. Video interviews with Tyler Friday, Javonta Jeanan-Baptist, Jachsen Wint, Harry Miller and Gavin Cup are also available here on the Lettermen Row YouTube channel.
