Raid of equipment, new strikes and unlimited power: Here are 10 Big Facts Shadow 2's Fate Directly From the Bunch



We had a lot of questions about Bongi after Destiny 2 Shadowkeep reveals at Gamescom 2019. We've seen new exotic, Artifact seasonal mods, the revamped moon complete with new activities and the first trailer for the Undying Theme Season with Vex that will accompany Shadowkeep. Plus we're still thinking about the big cut blog posts "Cut" by Game Director Luke Smith. So, we've talked about leading designers Benjamin Vomak and Community Director David "Dave" Doug at Gamescom to dig into the specifics of all this new content. Here are the 10 most important things we learned.

1. Will any of the seasonal artefact modes be added to the general mode pool?

Wommack: There are no current plans to do that. We are really trying to get Season of the Undying out with many of these changes as seasonal artifacts and just to see how the players react to it. We're always trying to see what the players are doing, and what they think about something or if they like something that will help inform the decisions we make later in Destiny. Not out of the table, but no current plans.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

From what we've seen, the Eye of the Gate Lord Artifact in Undying Season features several unique modes, including those with exclusive weapons, as well as modes that are not powered and / or reduced such as cheaper versions of the Fashion Enhanced Loader . These discount modes may allow for more ambitious breasts in the Undying Season, but we obviously won't have duplicate models under Armor 2.0, so don't expect them to become available in the ninth season and beyond. However, it is interesting to see some of the Finisher and weapon-specific models added to the general pools at the end of each season as a way to preserve certain styles of play. 2. Some players are worried about grinding the droplets, as special modes like Hive Armements are currently very rare. How difficult will it be to get improved regimes and the like?

Wommack: There are modes that you can get only through certain balms and certain determinations, but most modes are very simple. First, there is a huge decline in the modes that anyone can get, and the modes are no longer consumable, they are collectible. Once you've earned the mod, you can use it as many times as you like. Other fashions that will come to your attention are those that come out of seasonal artifacts. You get them simply by leveling the seasonal artefact – getting XP, killing monsters, making prizes, making missions and activities, crunching matches. All this will bring you XP that will level the artifact and allow you to choose to unlock the new mode.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

Players will start Shadowkeep with a supply of 11 neutral modes, and will be able to gain more modes by swapping materials and spending mod components in Gunsmith. This should give everyone a decent set of regimes to mess around with, but to get the top things they need to clean up the top activities. It does not say how rare those modes will be at the top, so I hope that the seasonal modes coming from "Artefact" will attract players until they get the drops they want.

3. Do you do anything with the new raiding equipment to help differentiate it from the normal equipment?

Wommack: Some of the Shadowkeep kits, which are raid raids, will have an additional mode slot, especially for special activity mode. Just like in the Leviathan raids, you had special regimes falling there. We have new ones falling into the new raid, the Garden of Salvation, which will be usable in that very attack.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

The season of impatience did a good job of making the endgame armor uniquely powerful, without making it overpowering. Armor from the Attack of the Crown of Sadness and Managers could use extra and exclusive modes, and it's nice to see that system return for gearboxes in Hidekepi and Undying Season, especially now when players can replace their top models around as much as they want.

4. How many new strikes are there?

Wommack: There are two new strikes coming to Shadowkeep. One is on the moon and the other is on Joo.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

Quite simply, it means we are finally getting new strikes. Yo Strike is a mystery, but we know that the Moon's strike is called Scarlet Guard, probably because it's set in that old, hard red fort. Xbox One and PC players will also get an extra strike once the current PS4-exclusive content has expired, so feel like getting three new strikes this season.

5. What are Nightmare Hunters? Are they the dungeons of Hadeekep, or more like hunting for an abandoned baron?

Wommack: Nightmare hunts are a new kind of activity you will engage in on the Moon via Shadowkeep, but we are not talking about them yet.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

The nightmares of the nightmares were briefly shown on the Moon map during Bongi's slot on the Xbox Gamescom show, and we wanted to ask them mainly to confirm whether they fulfill the role of the Shadowkeep dungeon – these being Nightmare Hunts collectively acting as Shattered Throne on Shadowkeep. It sounds like their job and that would make him count the total expansion activity: two strikes, several nightmare hunters, one dungeon and one raid. Oh, and two new Crucible maps with new playlists.

6. What activities will support the new difficulties of Adept, Hero and Legend?

Wommack: These hard-to-find labels are part of the evolution of the Night Out system. We're adding new levels of difficulty to challenge players. It's a small taste of what some of those additional levels and activities will be about Shadowkeep. There are many additional details that we are not looking at now, but that is something everyone will have access to.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

These difficulty settings were originally shown on the Nightmare Hunt screen, and we now know that they will be available for Nightfall Strikes and potentially other activities as well. Depending on how these modifiers affect robbery and how widely they are available, they could revitalize older content while giving the missing teeth the night falls.

7. Luke Smith wrote the director's big announcements, but it feels like they have had to touch a lot of hands. Is it scary to put the information out there, especially at a time when some parts of the gaming community will just take advantage of any negatives and keep them above dev's heads?

Wommack: I wasn't part of what Luke wrote, it's definitely his job. But I can tell you that I think it was wholehearted.

Doug: One of the things that we are stepping up this year is that we have always had a strong bond with the player in the Bunch. I can say this as someone from the Halo community going to work for the company. We want people who play our games to understand who we are, why the game matters to us and what we think about it. Obviously, Luke has a lot of important duties as a person leading the creative vision of the franchise, but from time to time he can pull off that and use 12,000 words to really invite players into our thinking process, it's worth it.

Are there certain things we will tell players about how we think about this world they live in, a world that feels as real as anywhere else in their imagination. I think transparency is what our core fans want. They want to know why we make the decisions we make, and they want to know what motivates us to change the world in which they live a significant part of their lives. So while we may be discussing topics of conversation that could become controversial, or potentially negative, overall what we felt was that people appreciated the fact that we were honest about how we felt about the game we were making.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

This is pretty clear: The Bunch is getting more comfortable sharing information like this with players, which should lead to improved transparency in the coming seasons. Smith's player response was overwhelming, so we hope to see more analysis in the future.

8. Luke pointed out that if one goes ahead, there can be only one Gambit. Are you going to literally remove either Gambit or Gambit Prime so you can focus on the other?

Wommack: Gambit and Gambit Prime, available to Light Light players, aren't going away anytime soon. It is talking about the concept that, at some point, Destiny is the final thing. It is a developing world, we will have to direct it and never stop refining it. At some point, just like with the Crucible where we change playlists, we will have to change how Gambit and Gambit Prime work. Don't expect this to happen when Shadowkeep appears.

Doug: Both activities will be available during Destiny 2 Year 3.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

Smith's comments have raised some serious – but not necessary questions – about Gambit's future, but it seems Gambit and the Gambit prime minister will not get dramatic changes for some time.

9. Is the well of light disappointed in the land?

Wommack: Well, given that there were as many as three or four paragraphs talking about it in the director, I think it would balance out a little better to not create a situation like Reckoning started. But again, we look at what the players are doing and find the right way to make sure the adjustment actually matters. If the choice is to run "Well of Radiance" strategies and you need to focus on that, this is not a good player choice. It's not a choice at all, it's a mandate – you have to use this. If something is at a level where it feels like "they must be upset", then maybe this is what we should do. But that doesn't mean it's the only thing we do. We want to make sure everything feels attractive and as a choice that actually matters.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

With the return of the Light Weapons to the "Dawn of the Titans Department", P radiation will have new competition in support of the Super. Hopefully, Bungie can find a way to balance the two classes so that the Warlocks aren't forced to use the Well of Radiance with Lunafaction boots, and so the Titans can do more than just the Melting Point bosses and put them down. 10. What is the Shadowkeep power cap and how many power levels will the artifacts give?

Wommack: This is actually pretty fun and still blows my mind a bit. Artifacts have no limit on how much power they can give you. As you get more levels, they will cost more and more XP. So players will go through a similar climb that they did with Forsaken. They hit the soft cap at 900, and then take gears through top-notch action until they hit the hard hat at 960. After that, through Artefact's contributions to power, they can reach an even higher level. The players will tell us how far they can get. And at the end of the season of doom, the seasonal artifact, the Eye of the Gate of the Lord, will depart. Then you'll have another Artifact next season to work on, so you can effectively start all over again, but still have all your 960 gear.

What this means for Shadowkeep:

It is nice to finally have specific numbers for the Shadowkeep Power climb. We have a soft cap at 900, which is when you start receiving Prime Engrams again, and another cap at 950. You can reach 960 by acquiring peak equipment that crashes at the end of the game like raids and dungeons, and you can overcome it by leveling your artefact, which has no power limit. Grimier's vague entry for the shattered throne suggests that the maximum power level is 999, but it sounds as if even reaching that cap would take serious leveling. Players with full armor of 960 could do this with Level 39 artifact, while players equipped with 950 equipment will need Artifact at level-49 to hit this theoretical cap. That's a huge chunk of power for an extra piece, and I have no doubt that hardware balms will bring dozens of levels to their artefact.
