Emmerdale's Robert Sugden makes a huge sacrifice for Aaron Dingle

EmmerdaleRobert Sugden's made a huge sacrifice for his husband Aaron Dingle tonight as he decided to hand himself over to the police.

Earlier this week, Robert (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron (Danny Miller) decided to flee the village together after learning that Victoria's rapist Lee Posner had died., meaning Robert could see the charges against him upgraded to murder.

Aaron has been struggling to say goodbye to his family in emotional scenes, and tonight's (October 17) episodes saw even more heartbreak as Aaron told his sister Liv (Isobel Steele) that she couldn't go on the run with them while Robert watched on with increasing concern.

"Liv, listen, you become another person, you know. Forever," he warned her. "It's not that easy. You'll be on your own, in another country for a while."

"Please don't try and talk me out of this. It doesn't matter what you say," Liv replied. "I'm coming with you."

"You're not," Aaron replied. "Liv, I'm sorry, but you're not coming with us."

Unfortunately, as Aaron took Liv to safely return home again, Paddy (Dominic Kirk) and Chas (Lucy Pargeter) had also got wind of what was going on and headed straight to the couple's hideaway – not knowing they were being followed. DS Wise and the police.

As the police got their address out of the box, they stormed the cottage and Aaron and Robert managed to rush off on foot, making Aaron plan to get the money they needed to start their new life together with Chas and meet up with Robert later.

But their plans were soon torn apart when Robert decided to hand himself over to the police instead to save Aaron from living a life away from his family.

"Why would he do that?" a devastated Aaron asked, while Paddy, Chas and Liv held him back and Robert was arrested.

"I don't get it. We were supposed to do this together," he sobbed. "What am I going to do without him?"

While this storyline is leading up to Ryan Hawley's exit from the soap, this is not the last we've seen of Robert just yet, and the story is expected to continue in upcoming episodes.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
