Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has ordered the Cabinet of Ministers to prepare a draft law on the requirements and standards of news by 31 December 2019. Corresponding Decree no. 837/2019 was announced by the presidential press service on Saturday.
According to the text of the document, the Cabinet of Ministers is required to develop and submit for consideration by the Verkhovna Rada a number of draft laws regulating the media activities in the country.
"Developing and submitting accounts to the Supreme Rada of Ukraine for regulating media activity in Ukraine, providing, in particular, a provision for news requirements and standards, mechanisms to prevent the dissemination of false, distorted information, its denial," the decree says.
The Cabinet is also expected to draft laws banning individuals and legal entities from the aggressor country from owning or financing media in Ukraine.
In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers should provide increased responsibility for infringing information legislation.
