In the last quarter of 2018, suppliers of smartphones shipped a total of 375.4 million. devices, which corresponds to a reduction in the market compared to the same period of the previous year by 4.9%. It was the fifth quarter in a row, when the market was declining year on year.
"The worldwide smartphone market is confused now, with the exception of several fast-growing markets, such as India, Indonesia, Korea and Vietnam, we did not see much positive activity in 2018," said Ryan Reit, vice president of IDC's tracking program mobile devices around the world.
According to experts, in the fall of sales, several factors are blamed, including the prolongation of gadget replacement cycles, increased penetration into many major markets, political and economic uncertainty, and growing consumer disappointment at the price of new smartphones.
In China, which accounted for about 30% of global smartphone consumption, 2018 was even worse than 2017, and sales decreased slightly more than 10%. At the same time, four leading brands, including all Chinese – Huawei, OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi – have increased their share in the Chinese market by up to 78% compared to 66% in 2017.
The leader of the global market with 20.8% remains Samsung, although sales of the South Korean manufacturer have dropped last year by 8%, to 292 million smartphones. Apple also dropped its supply, which is still in second place with 14.9%, up 3.2% to 209 million,
Chinese manufacturers have shown a rather strong growth: Huawei's deliveries rose 33.6% in 2018 to 206 million, The Chinese company with a market share of 14.7% almost caught Apple. Xiaomi became the top five in 2018: annual deliveries grew 32.2% compared to the same period last year, and sales exceeded the 100 million market. Like OPPO, OPPO, India and Indonesia remain the main markets outside China. Nevertheless, Xiaomi has succeeded in several markets in Western Europe.
