When the body receives enough sunlight – that is, a sufficient amount of UVB radiation – generally generates enough vitamin D. However, if you are not (too) exposed to the sun, for example in autumn and winter when the sky is cloudy, you can help with drops or Vitamin D pills. But that does not mean you should not go out regularly. Even in cloudy weather, a half-hour walk can be a balm for body and soul.
Vitamin D is the only vitamin that the body can produce (and therefore, in principle, it is a hormone more than a vitamin). More and more research shows how important a good level is. Because vitamin D not only significantly contributes to a strong immune system and promotes the immune system, it is also important for a stable psyche, because deficiency symptoms can worsen exhaustion and depression.
But vitamin D can do a lot more, as several studies show. This should promote performance and endurance, which is especially interesting for athletes. This is one of the conclusions of recent studies published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. According to research director Amr Marawan of Virginia Commonwealth University in the US, "a higher level of vitamin D with better training capacity is combined".
The study looked at whether people with higher levels of vitamin D in the blood had better cardiorespiratory fitness. Cardio-respiratory performance shows how well breathing and blood circulation provide oxygen to the body. There is a connection between higher levels of vitamin D and better mobility in men and women, young and middle-aged groups, and regardless of body mass index, "Marawan notes.
These new results fit the entire range of research results from recent years. "Anyone who raises the vitamin D level to speed may achieve better sports performance, and conversely, a deficiency in vitamin D may result in a fall in sports performance," the German Health Center recently wrote to learn about various studies on the subject. "Vitamin D improves immunity and efficiency of the lung-heart system, supports muscle growth and increases testosterone production. "

Various studies involving athletes have shown, for example, a higher oxygen intake due to vit. D, reduce the degree of inflammation of muscles and increase energy levels. Two independent studies, presented by the British Journal of Nutrition in 2016, also showed that vitamin D can improve the function of the lung-heart system.
The fact that sufficient vitamin D supply is essentially 'very important for human health', emphasizes the Federal Public Health Authority (FOPH) in the fact sheet. The Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Medicine (BLV) has also published specific "Daily Vitamin D Recommendations".
But before you take vitamin D in the form of drops or pills, you should measure the levels of vitamin D in the family doctor and get advice on the indicated dose, if necessary. Because overdose in the long term can also be harmful.
