This was a controversial decision of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) made this year, when it was decided to repeat the 118-year team competition.
The proposal voted down means that the classic tournament, played between 16 countries during the calendar year from 1900, will be a weekly event in which 18 nations will catch up with the title. The first of these is Madrid in Spain in November.
Mats Wilander, a former tennis player and the Swedish Davis Cup team in 2002-2009, thinks ITF should reconsider.
I think that the Davis Cup is among the reorganization, but without knowing exactly what needs to be done to get back on track, Wilander says who won the three finals with Sweden.
He says that the Davis Cup should not compete with the ATP route. The new format still means matches at home and away, but only in the first round. Wilander would have liked to see that he was at least semi-finalists.
The Davis Cup must consist of home and away matches and inspire local enthusiasts. For example, to remove Belgium's ability to play Davis Cupsemifinal and place them on neutral ground, it is madness.
There will be no fans
Wilander believes that a much larger percentage of viewers from the country want to see their stars at home.
That's what they'll remember the little kids who look at with their mom and dad. I bet 50 percent of hundreds of the best players in the world have seen the Davis Cup before watching them, maybe not Wimbledon, but certainly before other (Grand) Slams or ATP tournaments.
Wilander gains support in his view of the world novak Novak Djokovic, who won the competition in Serbian Belgrade at home and will lose public support.
This system of home and away games attracted all players and fans to this competition "- said Djokovic.
