This year, the Västra Götaland region decided to purchase a vaccine that protects against four virus strains, instead of three, as it was in previous years. Since the vaccination began on November 6, much more than is usually chosen to be vaccinated. A few days ago, the vaccine purchased was completed and replaced with an appropriate vaccine that is currently running out.

"There are many who have already been vaccinated, but for those belonging to a risk group who have not done so, there is a risk that the vaccine will not be enough," said Gunila Okborn, deputy surgeon of infection.

Does this mean that healthy people are ending the vaccine at the expense of the sick?

– For risk groups that the vaccine is created. It is a vaccine that exists to reduce the risk of a person in a risky group becoming seriously ill. This is not a problem for people as a whole. But that may be a problem for individuals, says Gunny Okborne.

Many health centers still have doses at home, so one of the risk groups still has a chance to vaccinate. If you belong to a risk group and you are ill, there is also help.

– There are medications that you can insert to reduce the symptoms if they are introduced early. Then contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

What can you do to avoid being infected?

"It can be difficult, but you do not expose yourself to sick people, avoiding large crowds indoors and washing your hands carefully. There is no guarantee, but in any case you reduce the risk.

So far, the flu of the year has not been taken seriously, either in Gothenburg, the county or in the whole country.

"But we are also very early in the season," said Gunny Okborne.
