Skåne was the first to offer overdosage with naloxone to opiate users to prevent overdose. Now, the National Board of Health and Welfare recommends that the health and medical service be offered to all drug users the preparation.
In the Skåne region, the Liberals and the Green Party for several years have been strong drivers to offer naloxone to users of heroin.
– It is essential that the recommendation that naloxone can have a life-saving effect, while adverse effects are limited. The recommendation is based on existing studies and expert assessments, says Stefan Brenhe, head of the project for work in drafting guidelines.
Welfare estimates that the recommendation is expected to cost around 12 million SEK. Health and correctional staff should be trained.
The calculation is based on 10,600 patients who have access to two nylon bags per year. Each package costs 449 SEK.
The Regional Council, Gilbert Tribo (L), feels it is pleasing that the National Board of Health and Welfare is withdrawing.
– Naloxone as a nasal spray increases the overdose and can always be included in the pocket of the addicts and save lives in overdose. We preach people to stop abusing, but even if they do not finish, our focus must be to save lives.
He is proud because Skane was the first to stop the overdose with a Naloxone offer three years ago.
"We hope that more regions in Sweden now accept the recommendation of the National Board for Health and Wellbeing," said Gilbert Tribo.
