Sony’s new premium wh-1000mx4 premium earphones are barely different in design from their wh-1000mx3 predecessors. The two colors of the models (silver and black) remained the same, with the same details of copper. As owners of the wh-1000mx3 model, we have repeatedly looked confused during the test of this year’s version, which headphones in the closet are actually new. A closer look reveals that the company has slightly updated the shape of the headset pads, which are very comfortable to wear. Especially when it is not hot. In addition, they are separated by a very small inscription wh-1000mx4 on a plastic plate at the base of the arch of the head. However, the new sensor in the left headset is more visible, detecting when you have headphones on and turning off the music when you have the headphones on.
The headset continues to be controlled by touch or gesture on the surface of the right headset. You can keep changing music, turning on or off, answering calls, or turning off external noise cancellation and turning on ambient sound when talking to someone or wanting to hear what’s happening outside your technology-generated peace bubble. Once again, we are also impressed by the ease of first connection or getting to know the headset and mobile phone via NFC contact. Simply tap the mobile phone next to the NFC logo, the devices are recognized, you feel the vibration and the phone tells you that the wireless dating process is complete. This should have all headphones, as well as all other Bluetooth-enabled devices.
They recognize speech and stop the music
Among the most notable innovations of the headphones is the new “talk and talk” function. With the help of five built-in microphones, it detects when you start talking and automatically stops playing music and starts making ambient sound. Music playback continues for 30 seconds after the end of the call, the time frame can be adjusted in the Sony headphone connection application. The function is very convenient when you have your hands full and you can not take off the headphones, but in practice it works very well. Although we noticed that the device sometimes even recognized when someone else was talking to us and stopped the music. This can be an advantage, but it can also be annoying. It can also be a distraction for people who often talk to each other. In this case, it may be better to turn it off.
Another novelty is the improved hands-free experience. The voice is now clearer than that of the trio, but it may be a bit robotic. But he probably will not mind. Another important innovation is the ability to simultaneously connect the Bluetooth headset to two devices, which allows fast switching. However, we continue to miss water resistance. It’s a pity that the usb-c input, which is used to charge the headphones, does not support audio transmission. This, for example, will allow you to listen and charge the headset at the same time when you are connected to a computer. The headset has a separate input for wired audio connection to other devices.
Superior sound quality
On the audio side, these are high-end headphones that support high-definition audio, and Sony’s LDAC codec also contributes to higher quality. Unfortunately, this does not work when we have headphones connected to two devices at the same time. Among the novelties is the support for 360-degree sound, which unfortunately we failed to fully test. There are not many music services that support this service and we are not their subscribers. It was also difficult to test Sony’s claims of better resistance to the cold control panel, as temperatures were still not low enough during the test. The same goes for recognizing our common locations and adapting the sound to the circumstances. These days, our movement is quite limited.
Elimination of environmental noise is also very high. This depends a bit on the sealing of the headphones, but the vast majority of noise is very well eliminated or at least reduced to an unobtrusive level. It is still difficult to say how much progress has been made compared to the troika. These were already at a high level, and the new headphones are no worse. The battery is also very good. Sony promises up to 30 hours of use, including noise canceling and LDAC codec and higher volume, that number is reduced, and you still have to squeeze two music jobs out of them. All of the above also requires a price – around 380 euros.
