From Thursday to Sunday, Planica will be the focus of winter sports. It will host the World Flight Championship, which was scheduled for March but was postponed to December due to a coronavirus pandemic. For the seventh time, Brother Gorisek Airlines will be the venue for such a competition, and the one from 1994, the Norwegian Espen Bredessen, is especially in the spotlight.
Since 1972, the world of ski jumping has been the time for world championships in flying. The premiere was led by Planica with the flying club “Gorisek Brothers”. It is interesting that none of the Slovenian competitors took a medal in the previous six home matches.
They were even closer to her Robert Kranjec in 2010 with the fifth and Miran Tepesh in 1985 with sixth place. Otherwise, Slovenia has in Kranj and Peter Prevc world champions of 2012 (Vickersund) and 2016 (Kulm), silver team medal from the last championship in Oberstorf, bronze of Peter Prevec in Harachov (2014), Urban Franca in Culm (1996) and the Vickersund team (2012).
“He advocated the nonsense that 191 meters is the maximum length.”
The World Championships in the summer of 1994 have a very special story in the history of jumping. At that time, the main actors competed for medals on two skis at the Gorizek Brothers Flying Club. Jaroslav Wanted surprisingly won a gold medal, silver became a Norwegian Espen Bredesen, bronze Italian Roberto Cecon.
Nothing unusual can be said. But something special happened in the individual race, which changed the jumps in the sequel. The International Ski Federation (FIS) was not for extreme distances and did not consider whether anyone had crossed the 191-meter mark. Each long flight ended at a distance of 191 meters. “The one who advocated the nonsense that 191 meters is the maximum length, even if the jumpers skip that mark, was a Finn Home SweaterHe recalls Jelko Gross, who for the last time will be at the upcoming World Cup in Planica in the role of competition leader.
He is looking forward to the Austrian decisions in the Slovenian camp
“He deserves a silver medal. We both know we can’t change the rules.”
Cekon jumped as much as 199 meters in the last series and jumped the second Bredessen by 17 meters. In the end, he was 5.1 points behind the Norwegian, Sakala was significantly too far. If the distance of 199 meters is taken into account, it would mean that he will stand on the second step of the winners’ stage and will have a silver medal hanging around his neck. At the press conference, Bredessen made an exceptional move and handed over the silver medal to his Italian counterpart, which received positive approval.
“I know he jumped better than me. He deserves a silver medal. We both know we can’t change the rules. We can be real athletes, so I gave him a silver medal,” Bredessen told national television at the time.
A final decision has been made: World Cup in Planica without spectators
Bredessen still left Planica as a record holder
“Athletes have shown that they have done one of the FIS biggest stupid things. Planica officials got their school from competitors,” Gross added.
It was the battle for medals that set historic flights over 200 meters away. The Austrian was the first to cross the magic line Andreasu Goldberg, but slipped on landing. Thus, the historical feat was inherited by the Finn Tony Niminenu, who set the mark at 203 meters. Then Bredessen left the mountain vacation with a smile on his face. He took as much as 209 meters in training on Friday and held the world record for three-year flights.

Holder of mountain records Kobayashi, world kraft
In 1997, he initially moved the mark to 210 meters, but the same day he was a compatriot Let Tight flew 212 meters and inherited it in the hunt for the record mark, which currently stretches to 253.5 meters. This is owned by an Austrian Stefan Power – his venture succeeded in 2017 in Vickersund.
The Japanese signed the longest distance in the flying club “Gorishek Brothers” last year Joyu Kobayashi (252 m) Whether someone will approach him or even skip him, we will be able to see between December 10 and 13, when the World Flying Champion will be held in Planica.
Will the world record holder be left without the World Cup in Planica?
Because of Planica they trembled every day, in the end only the green light shone
