United States: The Weinstein Case: The Key Public Closed For The Press – World

Key audience in the preparation of the trial of Harvey Weinstein was held on Friday, despite protests by powerful US media. The latter had to appeal to this judge's decision in New York.

The audience is important for this symbolic trial of the #MeToo movement. Will determine whether women who have accused the famous Hollywood producer of a sexual assault, apart from the two women who are the subject of her charges, will be allowed to testify at her trial scheduled for June 3.

Any alleged testimony of the victims, which would add to that of the two women, could increase the chances of persuading the 67-year-old producer. Both the counsel and the counsel wanted the hearing to be closed to the media and the public.

The prosecutor, Joan Orbon-Illuzi, said it was necessary to protect it for the moment of confidentiality of prosecutors whom he would like to call for, whose names can be mentioned for the first time at the hearing. The defender claims that the publication of the names of these women and their allegations against Mr. Weinstein would undermine their client's right to a fair trial.

"No alternative method"

But the lawyer representing the 13 media, including the New York Times and the New Yorker, who issued the first charges against Weinstein in October 2017, argued that the hearing should remain open in the name of press freedom. In particular, he argues that most of the allegations against Harvey Weinstein were already widespread in the press and in social media.

Judge James Burke, however, believes there is no "alternative method" to protect the rights of the defense and the confidentiality of the women concerned, confirming that the hearing will be held at large. Media lawyer Robert Balin said he would complain immediately.

Since October 2017, more than 80 women publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of rape, sexual abuse or harassment, including celebrities such as Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek. But he was only charged with two attacks – a forced election in 2006 and rape in 2013 – many other charges are too old to be prosecuted. (Ps / NXP)
