The Kinesiology track within the COE College-wide PhD program prepares students to work as leaders in a broad range of career pursuits related to the diverse fields of professional practice in the field of Kinesiology. Students applying to the Kinesiology Track without prior consultation with program faculty may be considered for admittance based on availability of faculty Kinesio Taping and Shoulder Impingement Syndrome program resources, need and expertise. Faculty may choose to sponsor the application of specific promising students based on position availability. When turning in your thesis, you may create your own cover sheet, or you may use the cover sheet template. Through the use of muscle testing, the use of kinesiology identifies areas of imbalance in the body, finds the realms which are relevant (structural, biochemical, emotional and energetic) and works towards achieving health goals by creating overall balance. This creates room in the injured muscle allowing for smooth flow of fluid muscles which in turn facilitates rapid healing of the muscles. The M.S. in Kinesiology offers a flexible curriculum to meet your specific needs and interests, allowing you to select a concentration in Exercise Science or Sport Administration. With marketable and employable job skills, from design and technical skills to communication and problem-solving skills, you’ll be prepared to work in a variety of fields related to sport, exercise science, human performance and allied health. The kinesiology graduate program enhances your skills and knowledge in sport science to qualify you for leadership roles related to movement and health. The Department is committed to the creation, enhancement, and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of athletic training and exercise science. It encompasses in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. Athletic Trainers, Physical Educators and those with a background in biomechanics or exercise physiology who are seeking a career in academia as a faculty member in one of these program areas. Upon entry, the sponsoring faculty will serve as the primary advisor throughout the program. The program varies in the number of credit hours required, depending on the candidate’s qualifications, and includes courses required by the college, courses in the specialization, courses that provide an emphasis/breadth, a field project/internship or an apprenticeship in college teaching, and the dissertation. All students are required to complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of core classes related to research methods and statistics. We most concerned with a student’s work in five core areas (in alpha order, not order of importance): English, Math, Science, Social Science, and World Language. The study of human movement, kinesiology encompasses a wide range of academic sub-disciplines, including sports medicine, athletic training, exercise science, sport management, biomechanics, sport performance, human performance, human ergonomics, recreation, physical education, and wellness. Prior to applying to the Kinesiology Track, potential students are strongly encouraged to contact program faculty that are practicing and conducting research in their proposed area of emphasis to identify potential advisors, determine availability of openings within the PhD track and discuss a plan of study and research.

The Kinesiology track is typically a 3-4 year program culminating in a PhD in Education. Nine hours of PhD level seminar, a graduate level teaching experience and research requirements provide culminating experiences within the program. Additionally, students must complete a minimum of 12 hours of Kinesiology emphasis and a minimum of 12 hours of additional coursework in consultation with their primary advisor. Remember, half of sport is psychological, everything must be done to ensure you are in the right mindset for the games. Students who do not maintain full-time continuous enrollment must be formally readmitted to the College of Education PhD program. A list of courses and enrollment information regarding the minor may be obtained from the Advising Office in the Department of Health and Kinesiology. This advising prior to application is particularly necessary for students seeking funding as a graduate assistant.
