"Given the strategic importance of the presence of the Lisbon emblem in the competition, integration of Sporting in the League of posters has been well received, and proposals to modify the competitive model extended to 14 clubs have been announced and will soon be debated," the federation said.
According to the statement of the Portuguese Basketball Federation, nine clubs (Esgueira, FC Porto, Galitos do Barreiro, Illibum, Ovarense, Lusitania, Benfica, Oliveirense and Vitória de Guimarães) and four associations (Aveiro, Braga, Lisboa and Setúbal).
The FPB explains, however, that "all the symbols of the highest level of basketball have made the federation achieve its position in this matter."
In the presidential campaign in Sporting, Frederico Varandas, who eventually won, announced the integration of Sporting in the Basketball League in 2019/20.
"Lions" were eight national basketball champions, last in 1981/82.
