Covid-19 deaths could nearly double by April despite vaccine spread, warns NBC Los Angeles report

  • The United States is projected to record a cumulative 539,000 deaths by April 1, according to a December 4 report released by the Institute for Health Metrics and Assessment at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
  • IHME researchers said the expected flow of vaccines only reduced the death toll by 9,000 before April 1, and said a rapid spread to high-risk targets could save another 14,000 lives.
  • The researchers also said that increasing the cost of wearing masks to 95% could save 66,000 lives by April 1.

The number of people killed in the United States by Covid-19 could almost double in the next few months despite the spread of vaccines across the country, health researchers warn.

The United States is projected to record a cumulative 539,000 deaths by April 1, according to a December 4 report released by the Institute for Health Metrics and Assessment at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

More than 279,000 people in the United States have died from the virus and more than 14.3 million have been infected, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

The country is expected to approve and start distributing one or more vaccines as early as December.

IHME researchers predict that the expected course of vaccines will only reduce the death toll by 9,000 before April 1, and say that the rapid spread of vaccines to high-risk individuals could save another 14,000 lives.

“A massive increase in vaccination in 2021 means we have a path to a normal life, but we have a few rough months ahead of us,” said IHME Director Christopher Murray. “We must be vigilant in protecting ourselves at least until April, when, as our projections show, vaccines will begin to have an impact.”

The researchers also said that increasing the cost of wearing masks to 95% could save 66,000 lives by April 1, and called on states to implement mandates to mitigate the spread and ease the pressure on the health care system.

“Especially in the northern hemisphere, it is crucial for governments to impose or re-impose mandates that restrict rallies and require masks,” Murray said. “Where the winter wave causes jumps in infections, there will be a lot of people who can still become infected and eventually die before the vaccine is fully spread.”

The United States is entering a brutal new phase of the pandemic as infections spread across the country and hospitals deal with a record number of patients since the pandemic began.

The country reported more than 227,800 cases of Covid-19 on Friday, a record since the pandemic began, while 2,600 people died, according to Johnson Hopkins. The United States reports an average of more than 2,000 deaths each week.
