Several people were seriously injured after a fleeing driver crashed into another car in Shandalton, Christchurch.
Canterbury metro area commander Lane Todd said the vehicle failed to stop for Papanui Road police around 4am on Tuesday.
The vehicle was signaled to stop due to the mode of driving.
A chase began that lasted about four minutes through residential streets, before a car collided with another vehicle driven by a member of the public at the intersection of Glendaway and Idris Rd in Shandalton.

The department for serious accidents is investigating the scene and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified, Todd said.
The intersection of Glandovey Rd and Idris Rd will be closed for several hours with a diversion site, he said.
One person was captured and rescued from the vehicle by firefighters, New Zealand fire and emergency spokesman Simon Lifford said.
A statement from the Christchurch Transport Operations Center said drivers were advised to use an alternative route and should expect delays.
Glandovey Rd was closed to the east boundary at Garreg Rd and the west boundary to Heaton Rd, St Rossall and the Strowan Rd.
Idris Rd was closed to the north at Vrocson Trace and south-bound at Plinymont R.
