Firefighters react to a barn from a barn that extended into a nearby house in the County of Queenstown-Ezra.
Emergency services were called to the fire at Rd Rd in the small town of Macara around 4.20 am on Saturday.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Andrew Norris said the blaze was found in a hay barn and expanded into a nearby home before 6 pm.
He said crews from Lake Javea, Lugate, Makarora and Vanaka are fighting with fire.
No one was injured in the blaze.
Norris said the crew of the blaze also attended a huge fire in Tinwald, south of Ashbourne.
He said three engines, five tankers and a command unit were dispatched to the Fords Rd fire shortly before 15:30.
The fence, which was about 4 meters long and 70 meters long, was completely set on fire, and another hedge about 100 meters south of it also burned.
No one was hurt in the blaze, Norris said.
