Stockholm, December 6, 2020 (SPS) Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Lindh confirmed yesterday that her country had never acknowledged Morocco’s claims or claims in Western Sahara, in line with the UN legal reading of the conflict.
In response to a question from a Member of Parliament, Ms. Linde reiterated Sweden’s efforts to find a just and lasting solution to the conflict, guaranteeing the right of the Sahara people to self-determination in accordance with Security Council resolutions.
I would like to add: “I believe that there is an urgency in appointing a new Personal Representative to the UN General Assembly as soon as possible, in order to restart the political operation and the latest developments prove this need.”
Regarding the situation in El Gerguerat, the minister stressed that more efforts are needed to maintain the ceasefire. And to insist that the only way out of this tension is to hold a referendum on the self-determination of the Sahara people. (SPS)
