The Minister of Education and Science Kārlis Šadurskis (JV) said a weekly interview with the LNT program "900 seconds", which was denounced by people who do not know well or do not understand the content of the new curriculum.
"I am just angry that such false messages circulate in social networks after literary lessons, because the new content, on the contrary, will increase the hour by one, not reduce the number of hours in the Latvian language and cultural block," said the minister.
He understands that every change teacher perceives different things, but if something is unclear and if you have questions about the new teaching content, it is best to ask professionals not to cry that everything is wrong.
"Of course, when I got acquainted with the content of the new study, I had many questions and I had the privilege to talk about them with professionals, so I do not see a problem if someone does the same" – added the minister.
Literary lessons are now included in the field of culture and art. In class IV-VI, the amount of literature will remain the same as before, taking into account that the schools have already worked on two example programs, one of which was on average 4 literary lessons per week and the other – on average five hours a week for three years. This means that the number of literary hours in different schools may already be different, said Guntars Catlaks, director of the National Center for Educational Content (VISC).
Currently, the new program is designed for 140 hours in three years, which is less than literary less than today, explained the head of the VISC. The reason for this was the need to increase the number of lessons for other subjects, for example computers that will be compulsory to grade 9, and the introduction of a third sports lesson and the "Drama" program, which, as Catlaks explained, is innovative in terms of speech and theater art.
"The total number of hours is what it is – it can not artificially spread." Consequently, it was necessary to reduce one literary class in 7-9th grade, "Catlaks said, adding that currently basic standards are being obtained, and then a decision will be made about the possibilities account for any reservations.
Catlaks said reducing the number of literary lessons is one of the demands, explaining that he can not yet say what the situation will be.
VISC and MES experts will be informed about the received opinions and reservations at the press conference on Friday, 9 November.
Catlaks "absolutely disagrees" with the opinions expressed in public space about the dramatic reduction of literature or the exclusion of literature from the curriculum.
"This is not true, literature has a large number of lessons, we emphasize the role and meaning of literature, in no way denying its drama, and not saying that children should not read and play only the theater, both are important. that the new educational content is aimed at a more active participation, there is of course a greater emphasis on the students being creative and participating in various artistic processes, not only learning theoretical knowledge and reading, "said Catlaks.
He stressed that the list of recommended literature will still be extensive and extensive, including both Latvian classic and contemporary authors, as well as world classics. "I can not agree that the role and place of literature will be reduced, it is understandable that one hour more or less for some may seem extremely important, but you still need to look at the learning process as a whole," Catlaks added.
The new example program provides schools with the flexibility to increase or decrease the number of hours in specific subjects, up to 10% of the total number of three years. This means that schools will be able to respond to students' needs. "If there is a greater need for literature, this possibility exists" – explained the head of the VISC. Because the field as a whole has determined the results to be achieved, a number of hours are planned to achieve these results. "The content goes on, but the number of hours and programs are just ways to implement content," said Catlaks.
Catlaks stressed that the content of the new content will not be strictly separated from the topics, which means that, for example, the ability to read can also be included in other subjects.
"The new content focuses on greater integration, especially in terms of areas and transversal skills." Without literacy, reading and understanding, you can not train competences – this is understandable, "said Catlaks.
"Reducing the number of literary lessons does not mean that students will read less." Even if half of all available lessons were devoted exclusively to literature, it would not be possible to read all of the author's recommended texts. Hours are not intended for real reading – read independently. to discuss the reader and do something with reading lessons. I do not think the one-hour reduction in grade 7-9 would have a significant impact, "said Catlaks.
As stated, the new basic standard of education will give educational institutions more freedom in organizing the learning process. Catlaks explained that the standard of primary education is the first of the best content documents. This will determine the way in which future students will receive elementary education in Latvia.
The aim of new content at all levels of education is education in the field of modern competences, so that people not only know the facts, but also know how to apply this knowledge – said the head of VISC. "When we started working on the content, we were guided by the principle that we want to see future people in Latvia," he stressed, adding that people should be responsible for members of society, for creative employees and professionals in the field of development.
