150,000 new cases of stroke

L & # 39;stroke there are 150,000 new cases annually in Italy, and now the number of people living in Italy with disabilities due to this disease is approaching a million. But how many chances a person has a chance brain damage return to your work? What are the times and main obstacles to professional reintegration? Professional reintegration of people affected by stroke has a large gap: in the case of serious brain damage, 20% return to work during the year, while in the case of low or moderate brain damage, increases to 71.9%. Experts gathered at the conference "Stroke: Risk Factors, Prevention and Rehabilitation", organized by the Foundation Santa Lucia Irccs and by Inail at the Congress Center of the Foundation in Rome.
The number of this phenomenon was presented by Stefano Paolucci, director of the Neurorehabilitation Department all & # 39; Irccs Santa Lucia, who, comparing the results of more than 50 scientific studies conducted around the world in the last ten years, was able to detect obstacles that appear sufficiently. clarity, despite the partial variability of data collected in various observed samples. "Among the most important – observes Paolucci – there are cognitive disorders, primarily attention deficits and loss of language use caused by aphasia, i.e. deficits typically present in cases of stroke with extensive brain damage. Depression also affects another phenomenon typical of this type of patients, but not so strongly".
The chances of returning to work are three times higher in the case of specialists with higher level of education and mental work compared to people performing manual work, it results from the research carried out, among others by Harvard Medical School and Yale Medical School.
Data on gender differences should be considered with caution, experts say, because they are heavily dependent on the cultural and regulatory context in individual countries, but the study completed in 2016. In South Korea (from 933 cases of stroke) it would reveal that under 65.2 % of men compared to 48 years of age, compared to 48.3% of women return to work.
But how to prevent, even at work, the onset of stroke? "It can not be simplified because many additional working factors, related to health and lifestyle, can cause a stroke – explained in his speech Carlo Serrati, director of the neurological operating department of the hospital San Martino Irccs in Genoa – In the workplace, the risk factor is, of course, stress, understood not in a general way but in a purely medical sense. Here, the most vulnerable are people who work with high demand and low control. These are people exposed to many requests without being able to decide and choose what can and can not be done".
The world of work over the next twenty years is changing: as sociologist Domenico De Masi has said, it is to become more and more intellectual and less physical, more and more destroyed in times and places, and more and more related to personal motivation and creativity. in terms of success and efficiency. "The red thread of today is the subject of work – concluded the ICRC Director General Santa Lucia, Edoardo Alesse – On the one hand, the continued commitment of doctors and researchers who work every day at our company Irccs to achieve new goals in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. Then comes the motive of returning to work for patients, which is essential for restoring their autonomy and quality of life".
