Israel postpones its decision on the law on church lands

Israel postponed the discussion on a law that would allow the state to take over church lands that were sold to private developers.

Under the pressure of church leaders, the Israeli government on Sunday froze the debate on the controversial bill. Churches of Israel have repeatedly blocked legislation, claiming that it could allow Israel to expropriate valuable properties.

The sponsor of the bill, lawyer Rachel Azaria, claims that church leaders have misinterpreted the bill. He says he is trying to protect thousands of residents living in buildings built on leased church lands.

Azaria says that residents can face huge price increases and even evictions from private developers when their lease expires in the coming decades. Uncertainty caused a sharp decline in the value of the property.

Azaria says he hopes to reach agreement with the churches in the coming weeks.
