After the ONE Championship has signed a contract with the most dominant champion in UFC history, UFC's biggest star claims that the best promotion will also take over the rest of the league.
In a rather unexpected move, there was a two-class UFC champion Conor McGregor, blaming the ONE Championship CEO, Chatri Sityodtonga, for the proposed UFC flyover solution (via Twitter):
You must now take all 125lbers that have been released, Chatri.
You speak the whole martial art and talk about respect, but your greed costs directly over half of the combat division, it is a chance to make money for the family.
Register the division.
ONE Championship, of course, recently signed a contract with Demetrious Johnson, who owns the record of the most consistent title defense in UFC history. While there was no mention of the UFC potentially resolving weight distribution even before Johnson's departure, they only intensified as a result of the movement that came as part of the "trade" with UFC for Ben Askren.
UFC weight reduction in flight; Jose Torres claims that the division was scrapped after the release
Art of the deal: How the UFC, ONE Championship, retired the historic Johnson-Askren trade
On Wednesday UFC airman Jose Torres and Jarred Brooks revealed that they were relieved of promotion, and many people who talked to MMAjunkie on condition of anonymity, expected additional cuts in the division.
Before McGregor's statement, there was a light UFC, Kajan Johnson, who had long been supporting organizational fighting efforts, staged a dagger statementas well as indicating the lack of effort of UFC athletes in creating a union or association as the main reason for such a move.
UFC officials have yet to publicly comment on this topic.
Earlier this year, Sityodtong criticized McGregor, saying that ONE Championship would not make any attempts to sign a contract with McGregor, even if the best UFC lottery was free because it does not represent real martial arts.
Demetrious Johnson will not miss UFC chaos, ready to promote proper fighting in the ONE Championship
"If Conor McGregor was a free agent, the ONE Championship would not try to sign it," said CNN Sityodtong in April. "We do not want people to curse people, throw bottles of water, do not respect people, call on wives and children, and – in my opinion – other unpalatable things that are not representative of real martial arts.
ONE Championship returns to action on Friday with "ONE Championship 83: Heart of the Lion", which takes place at the Stadium in Singapore. Stream Prelims on Twitter and Facebook, and main streams of cards live in the ONE Championship app.
Meanwhile, UFC is organizing its 25-year show on Saturday in Denver from "UFC Fight Night 139: The Korean Zombie vs. Rodriguez."
