A Day in the Life of the Xiaomi Manufacturing Factory: Getting in on the New Redmi Note 8 Pro

Xiaomi has been progressing in the smartphone market for a long time, beating the big guns in terms of sales year after year. And in recent years, it has made sure that customers have a choice of new models every 4-5 months. That's great for us as consumers who always want more than anything else, but more could translate into brand problems. And for Xiaomi, which sells more than a dozen smartphones, maintaining quality and consistency can be a challenge.

However, Xiaomi takes care of quality for all of its headphones, no matter what the headset costs. Hence, on the occasion of World Quality Month, Xiomi gave us a tour of the Foxconn assembly line in Andri Pradesh where she produces the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Note 8 Pro has some credentials for gaming and hence, the inside is quite complex.

As a result, India Today Tech has a remarkable look at the stringent manufacturing standards Xiaomi uses to build the Redmi Note 8 Pro, all of which ensures that the customer always gets the best quality. And I can say that each handset goes through several painstaking hours of inspection before being shipped from the factory.

Birth of the Redmi Note 8 Pro in a nutshell

Xiaomi manufactures its phones in India and we are no stranger to it. Foxconn's Circuit Factory was built exclusively for Xiaomi phones, and this factory made the Gamma Green Redmi Note 8 Pro on the day of our visit.

The Note 8 Pro begins its journey with several small components, all of which are sourced from Xiaomi's partners. Foxconn's Sricity assembly facility essentially gets all the components, such as cover plates, display, battery, covers, cables, ports, and even the free TPU case.

And once all these components are brought together, the challenging process of building a new phone begins. The mounting unit begins by researching the components with several tests, automatic and manual, for such things as display, touch screen, camera perforator alignment, battery voltage, visual inspection of the battery cover, camera units and more.

After the inspection is completed, the assembly line begins with the display unit glued to the frame. Here again, the frame undergoes strict quality control before it is considered good enough to be a chassis of the phone. Each unit with minor irregularities is kept away for further inspection. The frame is fitted with a coolant system pre-installed on the assembly line.

Released, a series of checks are provided to share only the best of the front units. The next row is the chipset marriage to the phone chassis. The MediaTek Fellio G90 chip is a gaming chipset and to keep cool, heat dissipates glue over the chip to help cool it while playing. Xiaomi initially loaded the chipset with test software, but later replaced it with the final version of Android based MIUI for consumers.

After the chip, the battery connected to the main board and once again, several quality tests are performed to ensure all components are connected well enough. Soon after, the cameras find their place on the board. Again, after a series of quality checks, the battery cover, which is what you see on the back of the phone, is fixed and the phone is finally complete.

However, after this, each unit goes through rigorous tests that take care of all the individual components and basic functions of the handset. The screen is tested for color and touch sensitivity, while cameras are tested for their performance through automated machines. And since the Note 8 Pro focuses equally on camera performance, Xiaomi has invested in special equipment that tests the individual performance of each camera on the phone, ie. wide angle camera, macro camera and more.

The units then go for an aging test, where the entire handset is played through automated tests for eight hours in the section. If the handset goes through this phase, it is sent for P2i coating, which is a special coating sprayed on the outer body of the phone and at all ports, as well as on the speaker grilles to deter water. P2i is a great way to save water damage devices, and Xiaomi says it witnesses fewer reports of water damage from consumers.

After finishing the coating, the phone is shipped for packaging, but is not where it is ready to be shipped. Xiaomi collects occasional quality control units once again and if the selected units pass away, the series is given a green signal for their journey to the client's home.

Quality is paramount to Indian customers

Whether you want a phone or not completely personal, but the amount of hours that the factory puts behind each telephone unit ensures that the customer does not face any problems.

Most of India's quality checks and specifics are born from consumer feedback. P2i coating application is a prime example after users complained about water damage to the units. Similarly, the addition of graphite cooling layers, a special coating on the ports to prevent metal corrosion, and more came out of customer feedback.

And these are the little things that Xiaomi believes ls continue to do for a better user experience. Xiaomi makes big numbers every quarter of the year, running the charts unlike any other brand, but also spends a lot of time making sure its honest price doesn't compromise the quality of the device. Xiaomi says it is proud to do so, from the cheapest Redmi 8A to its flagship Redmi K20 Pro. And it's a win for the consumer in every way.
