Tensions, incidents and arrests occurred early in the morning in several parts of the country, on the eve of the anniversary of the assassination of Alexandros Grigoropoulos.

Despite measures taken by the Greek police, banning the gathering of more than four people, in order to prevent further spread of the coronavirus, sudden rallies were held in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and Chania. According to information from police sources, so far more than fifteen people have been brought from the wider area of ​​the Exarchate.

Specifically, early Sunday morning, a group of about 20 KKE members tried to unfurl a banner and march at the intersection of Cavela and Messolonghiu streets, prompting ELAS to make further arrests.

We remind you that the planning of ELAS envisages preventing the gathering at the intersection of Messolonghiu and Cavela streets in the Exarchate, where 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos died on December 6, 2008.

At the same time, a total of 24 metro and ISAP stations were closed on the orders of Greek police. The tram routes from the stop “Aegean” in N. were also interrupted. Calm down to Syntagma. The tram runs from “Vula” to the stop “Aegean”.

Police also brought three young men to Thessaloniki on the anniversary of the assassination of Alexandros Grigoropoulos. Chania: Tensions at Grigoropoulos’s anniversary rally

At the same time, the intensity and small-scale episodes at noon “marked” the gathering held by a group of citizens in the square of the municipal market of Chania, on the occasion of the anniversary of the assassination of Alexis Grigoropoulos. From the early morning hours in the square of the municipal market, they gathered the police, because there was a ban on concentration due to the pandemic measures. Shortly after 12 o’clock, citizens started gathering on the sidewalk in front of the square, holding two banners and trying to march, despite the recommendations of ELAS to disperse.

As the group of citizens tried to carry out the march, the policemen moved towards them, throwing two grenades and detaching a banner. The gathered people remained on the spot shouting slogans and in the midst of tension the police continued with 9 arrests of citizens who were taken to the city police building. Those who remained at the scene asked the police to release the suspects, while a small group of people marched on Kidonia Street.

Patras: A gathering of anti-authoritarians in South Park

Strong police forces, mostly made up of MAT men, paid for Patras South Park at noon on Sunday. People from the anti-authoritarian space gathered at the place and marched with banners with slogans in memory of Alexis Grigoropoulos.
