MasterChef Junior Judge Gordon Ramsey donated $ 50,000 to help treat cancer patient Ben Watkins in cancer back in August, Variety confirmed. Watkins died Monday of a rare type of cancer, called angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma, at Luri Children’s Hospital in Chicago. He was 14 years old.
Ramsey and fellow MasterChef Junior competitors also sent Watkins a candid video message in August, cheering him on while on cancer treatment and encouraging people to donate to his GoFundMe.
“If you can beat me in the MasterChef Junior kitchen, believe me, you can beat this,” Ramsey said in the video. “God bless and a lot of love, buddy.”
Watkins competed in the sixth season of MasterChef Junior, finishing in the top 18 when he was just 11 years old. He was diagnosed with angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma two years later when he was 13 years old.
On Monday, Watkins’ family shared a statement on his GoFundMe page announcing his death. The site currently collects more than $ 200,000 for his medical expenses.
“When Ben’s rare disease was shared with the world, he was so taken aback by the outpouring of love that he received it from every corner of the globe – especially here in his hometown of Gary, Indiana. We can not thank this community enough for “Keeping our family in prayer and all that you have done,” the family said in a statement. “Ben has suffered more than his share of his 14 years on this earth, but we are comforted that his suffering is finally over. in the end, Ben knew that many loved him.
