On Wednesday, July 24, 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture in Ethiopia announced that the country has already planted 2.6 billion trees scheduled to fill the four billion trees planting the national project.

The project for placing four billion trees, officially launched by Prime Minister Abi Ahmed on May 26, 2019, is to mobilize the national tree planting program for 40 seedlings per tree.

In addition, he announced the planting of 200 million seedlings a day by 29 July 2019, expecting to break the world record so far held by India.

In line with this, Agriculture Minister Umar Husen said the distribution of seedlings will be completed by Friday, July 26, 2019.

National monitoring of planted seedlings will be carried out to ensure that the planted trees are reared, he added.

This will continue even in the future to identify which seedlings are grown and where, and who died or fed those who planted them, he added.

The National Initiative is critical for Ethiopia, which has lost billions of trees and forest resources over the years. Most of the planted seedlings are from indigenous tree species, it was
learned.

The initiative is set up to mobilize national afforestation of 40 trees per head. About four billion trees are expected to be planted during the summer, and a ministerial committee led by Prime Minister Abi Ahmed was set up to facilitate the initiative to plant tree seedlings.
