According to information collected by the National Survey of Employment (ENE) conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in October-December 2018 The national unemployment rate was 6.7%, ie 0.3 percentage points (pp) more than in the same period of the previous year, but 0.1% less than the previous quarter.
This result was a consequence of an increase of 1.1% for twelve months of the workforce, while employees increased by 0.7% in the same period, equivalent to 59,731 persons.
This increase was influenced by the expansion of women, from 1.3%, while in men it only increased by 0.3%.
Regarding the economic sectors, the number of employed persons was predominantly mainly by communications (14.5%), healthcare (11.2%) and construction (4.5%).
Regarding the type of employment, private workers increased by 0.9% and public employees by 3.2%. On the contrary, self-employed workers fell by 1.3%, the biggest drop since the quarter March-May 2015.
Unemployment is higher in women
According to INE, the rate of Unemployment among women reached 7.5%, with increase of 0.7 pp. in twelve months, as a result of the increase of 2.0% of the workforce, greater than the variation of 1.3% of the employees.
Meanwhile, unemployment in men reached 6.2%, which varies 0.2 pp. in comparison with the same quarter of the previous year, due to the increase of 0.5% in the labor force, higher than the one reported by the employees (0.3%).
