Source: Google Hangouts turns off in 2020

According to a source familiar with the product's internal roadmap, Google Hangouts for consumers will be switched off sometime in 2020. It's not at all surprising, since Google essentially interrupted the development of the application more than a year ago. But, I just know, I'm going to 2019, this is really the last year to continue using the desired (?) Inheritance chat apartment.

Last spring, Google announced its Hangouts brand top for Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet business use cases, so writing has been on the Wall for the death of the consumer on Hangouts for quite some time. In the meantime, Google has redirected its efforts to send messages to users of RCS & # 39; Chat & # 39; and Android Messages, after the ill-fated cases of Allo.

Since Google has left the application in terms of development and assumed eventual death, many have already drifted away from use. But Hangouts is still a prominent Gmail chat feature on the web and the app remains on the Google Play Store to this day. Many recent criticisms say the application shows signs of age, noting errors and problems in operation.

As mentioned, Hangouts as a brand will live with Chat Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet on G Suite, the previous one was designed to be a Slack-compatible application application and the second video encoding platform. Meanwhile, the Google Voice call, which was initially independent and then long integrated into Hangouts, was moved back to its own redesigned application earlier this year.

Interestingly, in addition to his forthcoming placement, Hangouts was one of the few applications to get early support for the new MMS and RCS functionality of Android Auto, along with Android Messages and WhatsApp.

Update 12/1: Scott Johnston confuses and denies that all decisions are made regarding the timeline of closing Hangouts. However, confusing, he says consumers of users of "Hangouts" will be somehow "upgraded" to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, both are businesses focused on products that meet different needs.

Scott also explicitly confirms for the first time that the Hangouts Classic, subject to this report, will be turned off "at the end".

In the meantime, the second source has since backed up my initial report and says the decisions are really made to retract older Hangouts.

9to5Google's Take

Hangouts closing for a long time comes, so if nothing else, his retirement is still over a year, is what is surprising here. I would dare to assume that its actual usage figures are still significant, given that Google's initiative to build a genuine alternative to messages, Allo, was desperately thrown. In the meantime, the "Chat" RCS initiative, which leads to Google, is not out of the country.
