Randy Shore: If every day is special, maybe no day



It can not be an accident that the National Unification Day comes during the New Year's Resolutions Week. Can I?

So, how is International Coffee Day (October 1) and Pi Day (March 14th) nearly six months away? And what exactly is the World Milk Day (June 1st) that they do four months before the American Cooking Month (October)?

There are over 1,500 special days, weeks and months and, frankly, it's anarchy there.

You can mount a campaign through social media channels at no cost, if you're smart enough to share your message.

"Obviously, marketing people are caught up on this and therefore we are seeing a day of ice cream and coffee day," said Liza Cavanaugh, an associate professor at the UBC Sauder School of Business.

But on social media we can all talk at once, and we do.

"Everyone can do it now and it's a blessing and a curse," she said. "It's wonderful that people without resources can have a megaphone, but the lack is that everyone has a megaphone and they all use them at once.

"People just feel overwhelmed, you do not know what to listen to. We just are not enough developed to filter out all the information."

It was to be that only a few days in the calendar really important. Chanukah and Easter, check out. Christmas and Easter, done.

But some of those days were co-opted by trade.

"Special days are not so special," Cavano said.

"The modern version of Santa Claus as we see it on seasonal screens or school classrooms was largely shaped by the Coca-Cola Company, although Christmas has obviously its religious roots," she said.

Synterclass is a historical template for Santa, but he was not a cheerful old elf. Santa Claus in the nineteenth century, in the nineteenth century, often had a black-haired gentleman wearing a birch for beating uninhabited children.

"He was very meaningful, really," she said. "He can play some nasty tricks for you. He was not cheerful or just eating cookies."

The companies of congratulations – Hallmark, American Greetings – have made Valentine's Day often the painful commitment that it has today.

"They actually made people feel like they did something wrong if they did not participate," she said.

The designation of special awareness days is a respected practice, even though it was something that governments just did.

The Month of Black History (February) was first proclaimed a weekly awareness in 1926, celebrated in the United States and Canada. National maple syrup day (December 17) came much later, and it is also seen on both sides of the border.

The days of health and disease information have been with us for decades and help to focus the attention of fundraising campaigns. The Heart and Stroke Foundation marks the month of informing about stroke (June) and month of the heart (February), but there are dozens of others.

"It can be a challenge to hear, there are so many special days," said Kelly Pooddister, national program manager for the Canadian Society for AIDS.

Only Aids Community AIDS Week (December 1-5), AIDS Walk (September 15), Aids Awareness Week (usually last week of November) and World AIDS Day (December 1) )

While the causes of cancer are still very much focused on raising money for research, the World AIDS Day has passed in more memory of the people we lost out of the disease.

"We get a good amount of coverage for the World AIDS Day – we just had our 30th year – but there's AIDS awareness week and it does not get much publicity at all," she said. "It is only known to people who are involved in the community, as opposed to the general public."

Some non-profit organizations can use social media to their advantage, HIV / AIDS remains a serious entity that does not care about your friend's fun deals.

"With breast cancer, you have all NFL players wearing pink shoes, but with AIDS, not so many people want to be associated with it," she said.

This January 7, the Alzheimer's Association of Canada will launch its annual awareness-raising campaign, said Rosan Meandro, communications director.

"There is a lot more noise on the market, it's very crowded, so it's becoming more challenging," she said. "And it's not just about consciousness, it's important when it comes to collecting money. How do you stand out from the crowd?"

The calendar provides the Company with many other opportunities to get its message.

The month of consciousness about American Alzheimer's disease is November, while World Alzheimer's Day and World Alzheimer's Day are in September. The association also refers to disease-related events, such as the Sunday of Brain Health awareness (October 15-19), the Heart of the Heart, the Palliative Care Week at the National Hospice (May 6-12) and the National Carer Day (April 3).

"It seems that new special days are constantly appearing, so we are trying to use the best we can," she said. "Each of them is an opportunity to tell another part of the story."

Events such as organized works, office raffles and bake sales, which are often associated with day of awareness, also foster a sense of community, Cavano said.

Silly special days like Pi Day, Star Wars and Dress Up Pet Day do the same work on social media, she said.

"I think it has value in the shared experience of the celebration, regardless of the cause," she said. "It's something we should expect and connect, even if it's about ice cream. Perhaps your neighbor is super-sensitive about the National Ice Cream Day (January 15)."

"We excluded from each other with the growth of technology, so every experience you share with real people goes to the plus column."
