Over 48,000 cases of dengue, 52 deaths this year – Sri Lanka

According to the Department of Epidemiology, a total of 48,303 cases of dengue and 52 dengue deaths were reported in the country by December 20 this year. According to sources, the largest number of dengue cases, 9,551 were reported from the Colombo district, while the second largest, 5,408 were reported from the county of Gampaha. The third largest number of cases of dengue, of 4,727 were reported from the Airbus area.

"The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) reported a total of 2,399 cases of dengue during the same period, and other parts of the Colombo district reported a total of 7192 cases of dengue." The total number of dengue cases reported by the Western Province is 17,844, epidemiologists write.

In the meantime, medical experts and consultants advise the public to seek medical treatment without any delay for any type of fever without the use of home remedies. Patients should only be advised to take paracetamol. Patients should, however, refrain from taking other medications, especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Ibuprofen cause dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) that can be fatal, "they said.
