Google finally realized that there are too many chat apps and will close Hangouts in 2020.
According to 9to5Google, a source familiar with the product's internal roadmap, said it would close somewhere in 2020. Since Google has essentially stopped updating the application a year ago, this is not so surprising.
What is surprising is that the search giant will keep Hangouts alive for another year.
While consumers may lose a well-known chat application, Hangouts will live for enterprise users such as Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. In the consumer market, Google has turned its focus on RCS and the Messages application.
Despite the impending death, Hangouts still stands out in some other popular Google services, such as the Gmail web client. Hangout stays in the Store Store, although comments have come up for regrets about bugs and performance issues.
