Fire wipes most donations in the Food Sharing Community

The largest food from Newfoundland and Labrador lost most of its food in the main warehouse after a fire Wednesday morning.

For example, Walters, general manager of the Association for Food Transfers in the Community, told CBC News he was destroyed to see the great reserve smashed by smoke and water.

It is not yet clear how many foods have been destroyed.

The association serves as a central location for donations and provides food banks throughout the province.

"All we know now is that our boys are safe and there are no injuries," Walters told the PSV newspaper on Wednesday morning. Later confirmed the fire and subsequent efforts to combat the flames destroyed much of the warehouse.

The regional fire department of St. John appeared on the scene immediately after 9:30 am on Wednesday to the warehouse on the road Toplil.

The traffic was closed for about an hour on all four lanes of Topsail Road. Some firefighters retreated and left around 10:30 am, while Newfoundland City and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary remained on stage.

Efforts to increase donations to the association have begun before firefighting to leave the warehouse.

While the building is closed, MP Seamus O'Reillan said his staff will collect donations at his nearby office to vote on the Road of Topsill.

Walters said he was devastated by the blaze, but said the long road to recovery had already begun.
