BMW engineers are working on a successor to the successful family of 8-cylinder V-shaped N63 / S63 engines, BMW sources, citing company sources. The new unit, codenamed S68, will retain the same two-turbocharger architecture, but will have less operating volume.
According to BMWBlog informants, the new V8 is designed to work in tandem with an electric motor that will enable it to meet stricter environmental standards. The cubic meter would be reduced from 4.4 liters to 4.0 liters to pay lower taxes to Chinese buyers.
The new engine is likely to debut under the hood of the limited edition CS Series BMW M5 in two to three years. More information should emerge after the introduction of the upgraded M-5 in competition scheduled for next year.
