Although his attacks are less sophisticated than those of SamSam, attacking just one machine at once, ransomware like the Matrix poses a real danger. There are really developed new variants that can scan the network to search for new potential victims once they are entered into the network.
Sophos, a security specialist, today presented his new report, "Matrix: Low-key Targeted Ransomware," in which he presented his recommendations to ensure an optimal level of protection:
Limit access to applications on the remote, such as Remote Desktop (RDP) and VNC.
Conduct full and regular analysis and network intrusion tests. If these actions have not been taken recently, this must be done as soon as possible so that the door is not left open to cyber criminals.
Carry out multi-factor authentication for sensitive internal systems, whether for employees in a LAN or VPN.
Create off-line and off-site backups, and develop a recovery plan after an attack involving recovery of data and systems for the entire organization simultaneously.
