Huawei's P30 Lite test: a family look

After the launch of the P30 and P30 Pro, Huawei in France introduced the P30 Lite. As his name suggests, the newcomer is a brighter version of the big brothers to provide an affordable entry point in the P30 family. This announcement is nothing but a surprise, the P10 and P20 ranges also have the right to make an easier declaration. And the least we can say is that the Lite series meets the successes.

According to the GfK Marketing Studies Institute, P20 Lite was in 2018 in the top 3 smartphone sales in France through all channels (operators, special stores and the Internet). In the spring of 2019, it is still on the list of ten best-selling smartphones. It's not bad for a product that has a year of internship (eternity in the world of new technologies).

To say that his successor is expected is euphemistically. The P30 Lite lives up to the reputation of its predecessor? To find out, nothing was worth the good old test! But before entering a dense topic, let's say we are testing the French version of the P30 Lite, not the Chinese or Canadian version. This year, Huawei gives its regional subsidiaries a little flexibility in terms of configurations, especially in terms of working memory or integrated storage.

Price and date of release

P30 Lite is available in France today for a price of € 369 without a subscription. If it follows the same path as its predecessor, it should quickly be on the price of the price through the acquisition of a subscription with an obligation. Keep in mind that its launch price is identical to that of the P20 Lite, but it has more memory for memory and a more powerful camera.

Design: very successful

P30 Lite covers most aesthetic codes for the other two family members. On the reverse side is a gradient of purple blue, nicely called "Vekslev". We can also decide in France for piano black or pearly white, also the most beautiful effect. Regardless of color, they all have a joint to keep enthusiastic dust or fingerprint, forcing the user maniac to be cleaned frequently or to fit a shell. Required low price, the fingerprint reader moves to the rear. It is accompanied by a triple photo module exceeding several millimeters, as well as one ton of LED flash: we will return to it later.

The P30 Lite occupies only around the dimensions of the P30 while it is longer by 4 millimeters.
On the right side there are three mechanical buttons (volume control and turning on), the nanoSIM + microSD drawer is at the top, while the USB-C port and audio jack are on the opposite side. It should be noted with interest that Huawei does not opt for the NM card and keeps the old audio connector. Asked about this, the manufacturer suggests that the Lite version of the P30 had the space required to accommodate these two devices unlike the P30 and P30 Pro. It's a pity, of course P30 Lite has no special protection against water and dust.

Screen: surely one of the most important

The Lite Series requires, Huawei retains the P30 OLED display on its LCD screen. Has a diagonal of 6.15 ", shows 2312 x 1080 pixels and covers 84% of the front panel. I amI produce an image that we consider very well on a global scale, especially after you go through the settings. And again: this is really necessary only for the unconditional ones of colorimetric faithfulness (from which we are).

Others will be satisfied without any problem with the hair color directions to make the image more flattering to the eye.

Whether you're playing, watching videos or editing a photo, the surface of the big screen remains remarkable. The slope, here reduced to a simple fall, is quickly forgotten. Obviously, we do not reach the level of contrast on the OLED screen here, the P30 Lite board does not have to flourish in the face of competition, far from it.

Performance: exactly for entry level

The P30 Lite has a Kirin 710 octocore, 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage (expandable with micro SD card). The midrange processor, connected to the exact amount of RAM, is ideal for this type of product intended for non-intensive use. If you accidentally want to start playing a lot of resources like Fortnite or PUBG, you will need to make a choice between the performance or the quality of the graphics. And again, sometimes we can face a cut-off display. This in the end is not so serious, the smartphone remains homogeneous in all other uses.

The little game of benchmarks, The P30 Lite has a very average rating of Antutu of 131,768 points, less than 178,891 points earned by Mi 9 SE of Xiaomi, one of its direct competitors. P30 Lite here confirms its status as an entry-level device for users who want social networks, multimedia, but do not want to use the latest games.

Interface: and the dark mode?

Not surprisingly, the P30 Lite delivers Android 9.0, as well as the EMUI switching house in its version 9.0.1. Please note that the P30 and P30 Pro are eligible for EMUI 9.1, with some additional features, including the activation of the dark mode. Despite the excuses of "Huawei" (" dark mode saves the battery with an OLED screen, but not with an LCD screen ") we can only regret this omission. Because out of the energy, the dark mode saves the user's eyes, under severe stress when the brightness increases. Let's hope the manufacturer will return to this strange decision during the upcoming update!

black theme
By digging a bit in the themes offered online from Huawei, we can radically change the look of the interface.

For others, nothing to report in particular: EMUI 9.0.1 is always part of the coats in our opinion most enjoyable … if not the most modern. Refresh the interface, and especially the redesign of the Parameters section, would be welcomed. Because it must be recognized, E.MUI starts to become a bit old compared to a single graphical interface, the interface that now equips Samsung smartphones. According to our sources, this redesign of the interface is widely requested by most regional subsidiaries and is now one of the priority challenges of the software development team.

Fortunately, old age is not a synonym of obsolescence and EMUI 9.0.1 dignitly fulfills its mission. The interface reacts with fluidity and we did not encounter a particular problem during our tests, even after applying a topic to remove the appearance of the interface.

Network / wireless / GPS: average

The P30 Lite comes with a Class 13 4G modem, which allows it to reach the theoretical speed at a speed of 390 Mbit / s and 150 mb / s per uphill. We are far from enhancing capabilities like the P30 Pro. What is important? The P30 Lite gives you full satisfaction in everyday use, including the video on the internet… if the 4G + network is not overloaded. In practice, we did not encounter a particular problem for the 4G networks of the four national operators in Paris and the Paris region (the average transmission speed is between 60 and 110 Mbit / s). As usual, these figures are given only for information and vary greatly according to the geographical position during use.

Wi-Fi connection is not a special problem, just like GPS whose synchronization is very fast. There is no problem even with Bluetooth 4.2, even if we would find it logical to benefit from version 5.0.

Audio: disconnect the supplied headphones

Without tormenting with perfection, the only speaker of the P30 Lite does a good job anyway. The performed sound does not leak and has some clarity. The bass is, of course, insufficiently represented, but without being really dramatic. As it is, the P30 Lite is a pleasant audio companion for occasional use. The sound produced in telephone communication is also very honest, hands-free and listening to the ear.

Things go wrong as soon as we look at the use of the supplied headphones. These, fitted with an audio jack, are bad: low sound power, muffled sound, low non-existent and desperate media of cleanliness. We tried to improve the rendering of audio by activating Hysten's settings, the technology to improve home headsets without any convincing results.

The only way to get a good sound is to use other headphones or a handset that is worth the name. Fortunately, the P30 Lite delivers a codec aptX HD axis that makes good sound quality in Bluetooth … provided you have audio files at a height.

Camera: The devil is in detail

On the screen of the screen is a camera equipped with a sensor of 24 Mpxls and by opening a mid-angle f / 2 lens. It produces high quality and high-light images. Not surprisingly, digital noise comes as soon as it falls. Autofocus remains reasonably responsible for positioning the smartphone. Maximum video recording is in Full HD 30p, electronic stabilization to get the correct picture.

The rear camera model, equipped with three cameras, seems much more interesting, even if it is not co-designed with Leica and therefore only uses Huawei technologies.exitalso the RYYB sensor that impresses us so much on the P30 Pro: we must leave some advantages to high-end products! The main sensor delivers 48 Mpxls and has a f / 1.8 lens opening. The second module is equipped with a 8 Mpxls sensor and an ultra-wide angle f / 2.4 lens. Finally, the third module and its 2 Mpxls sensor are only there to provide information about the depth of field of the other two.

There is no big surprise at the level of the camera interface that does not really evolve since P10. Just boring details, unhappy positioning of the HiVision icon (Google Lens with Huawei Sauce). It is placed exactly where you put your left thumb to shoot in landscape mode, it starts with HiSense. It is then necessary to leave the image recognition interface, and then start again, paying attention to where you put your fingers.

Very wide angle

Zoom 2x
Zoom 2x

The quality of images produced by the P30 Lite is highly variable depending on the type of photo taken. By default, AI remains actively recognizing scenes and appropriately adjusting camera settings. In this case, the images are beautiful all over the sun without using the zoom. In zoom x2, things get a little worse as soon as the light fades. Nothing is surprising in this, although it was thought that the use of the 48 Mpxls image sensor of 12 Mpxls would provide a better result. At a very wide angle, the image weighs only 8 Mpxls, the nominal resolution of the sensor. The image looks very accurate, because we are not trying to look it over too cautiously, especially in low light.

In telephoto or wide angle, the image lacks sharpness, the impalement imposed on Jpegs by the image processor deletes the finer details. This is almost invisible until you see the full-size image on the computer. Do not rely on pro mod to get a better result because it does not offer RAW capture. We can always try to shoot at 48 Mpxls (only in pro mode), but this will not improve the level of detail. By the way, ohwould appreciate the presence of stabilization.

Although it's far from being bad, the P30 Lite photo-modules are a little disappointing if you want to make beautiful pictures. You'll still be happy with the result if it's just about sharing your works on a social network or print them in small or medium format. But no more.

Equipped with a 3340 mAh battery, the P30 Lite can monitor you in your digital activities for a good day (a bit less in case of intense use of the game or video). In moderate use, it will be held for a little more than a day, although it seems appropriate to leave it overnight. In this regard, the smartphone is supplied with a power of 18 watts. However, it is not compatible with the induction charge: no small savings!
