High-end hotels in China run by international Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt networks have apologized after the video became viral, showing insanitary practices, including one cleaner who used the same sponge to wipe off the drinking cups and the toilet.
An 11-minute video recording shows that hidden photos from the cleaning apparatus wipe the mugs and blot out used towels and other unhygienic behaviors at 14 international hotels in China. Ever since it was published by a blogger using the Huazong pseudonym, the video has been widely shared and watched almost 30 million times.
One of the online users wrote: "I always thought that five-star hotels would be much better, I would never have expected."
Some of the pictures that later appeared apologies included Le Royal Meridian Shanghai and two Sheraton hotels in other Chinese cities, all operated by the Marriott, as well as Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai, one of the Hilton hotel brands. Other hotels whose cleaning products were caught on the camera and issued statements included the Park Hyatt Hotel in Beijing and the Shangri-La Hotel in Fuzhou, Eastern China. Many of them said they were investigating.
City tourism agencies and health agencies in Beijing and Shanghai are investigating and contacting the hotels on the film.
