As every year, Intel and AMD, the two most important processor manufacturers for consumer computing, are rebuilding their chip line to improve productivity tools, applications, and video games. While there are models that are slightly more robust and powerful, designed for an enthusiastic or corporate segment, in this review we focus on analyzes two of the most powerful processors for consumerss, Intel Core i9-9900K (9th generation) and AMD Ryzen 2700X, available on the Argentine market.
If there is something that processors have improved lately, in addition to the speed of operation and the support of new technologies (USB 3.1, faster networking, support for new generation cards and peripherals), it is energy consumption and temperatures. For this reason, both Intel and AMD are working year after year to produce processors with a lower production process, achieving chips that heat less and consume less energy.
When it comes to design, the i9-9900K and Ryzen 2700X are similar in size to the naked eye. However, as shown in the figure, the Intel chip does not carry contact pins in its body, because they are in the motherboard's connector where the CPU is placed. In its technical part, the Core i9 is manufactured at 14 nm and carries 8 physical cores, 16 processing themes, a 3.6GHz base and a turbo 5.0GHZ, with a 95W (TDP) consumption. For its part, the Ryzen 2700X is 12 nm, with 8 physical cores and 16 processing threads, at a speed of 3.7 GHz and a turbo 4.3 GHz, with a TDP of 105 W.
Ingredients for gamers
The recipe for using these two processors is simple. Most importantly, besides having a cabinet for storing all the hardware, a power supply of at least 500W real (if it is possible to certify 80 Plus) and, of course, a hard drive or solid state drive (SSD)) to save content and operating system, is to have a motherboard compatible with these chips and RAM DDR4 (we recommend them to be 3000 MHz, to have better performance). In the case of the Intel CPU, the compatible motherboard is the Z390, while the AMD chip requires the X470.

It is important to mention the hardware used to make the tests high quality, as both chips require powerful components to take advantage of their technology. To include the Intel CPU, we built the motherboard MSI Z390 Gaming EDGE AC, 16 GB DDR4 RAM HyperX Savage 3000 MHz, solid state drive Fury RGB 480 GB (here we have installed Windows 10 Pro), Seagate IronWolf 10 TB hard drive ( games and applications) and liquid cooling Corsair H100i Pro While the AMD chip is using the same configuration, the motherboard selected in this case was the ASRock Taichi X470. In both computers, the board used was the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 11 GB video memory.
A computer with these features, although extremely powerful for rendering 3D rendering, graphic design, among others, is designed to play everything new, in the maximum possible configuration. That is, you can choose, for example, 4K resolution, detail for lights, shadows and reflections to the maximum, with great fluidity in the movements of the game and without noticing the loss of performance.
Both the Core i9-9900K and Ryzen 7 2700X give similar performance in games and, when combined with a mid-to-high-end graphics card, you can experience 60 frames per second, which you need to play properly. . Although it is true Intel CPU, in some cases, is slightly faster than AMD, its price is also higher, so the choice of each chip can be of taste and pockets. That is, AMD CPU is a very attractive option and at the same time economical.
Battlefield V. The first action game was tested with 4K resolution, with ultra graphics (without DRX technology) and showed a speed of 82 frames per second with the Intel Core i9-9000K.
In tests performed by Clarin, The Intel Core i9-9000K, joined by the RTX 2080 Ti video card (one of the fastest and most expensive on the market), can launch the game Battlefield V with a 4K resolution, with ultra graphics (no DRX technology) at a speed of 82 frames per second (FPS). For its part, Ryzen 7 2700X performed the same game, with the same configuration, at 74 FPS. With the activation of DRX (tracking technology that supports the new graphic RTX from NVIDIA and at the moment, Battlefield V), the yield is reduced to 36 FPS with i9 and 29 FPS with Ryzen 7.
Others games that require fewer demands like Fortnite, for example, they worked flamantly with both processors. In the case of Intel i9 and RTX 2080 Ti, the popular battle of Royal ran, in Full HD resolution and Ultra graphics, at 200 FPS; while Ryzen 7, in the same configuration, worked at 195 FPS. In AAA games like Shadow on the tomb Ryder, the situation was similar, although this time AMD won the CPU was a winner. In the maximum configuration, but in Full HD resolution, this game was running at 132 FPS, while the i9-9900 was held at 125 FPS. In both cases, figures are not visible to the naked eye.
Overcoming graphic boundaries
To get more of these two processor beasts and the new NVIDIA graphics card, one of the world's largest monitors, is a round, ultra-wide screen where the visual experience is more appealing. It's about Samsung CHG90 QLED 49, available in Argentina, similar to the ultra-wide curved model LG will present at the Consumer Electronic Show 2019 (CES) in Las Vegas. This aims to be a new trend on the screens.
With this monitor, which displays images with a resolution of 3840×1080, which makes the wider video game environment (in FIFA, for example, you can see both areas), the Core i9-9900K processor and RTX 2080 Ti have achieved speed in FIFA 19 of 120 FPS, while the Ryzen 7 2700X game was held at 140 FPS. In the shadow of Tomb Raider, with the same resolution and ultra quality (the environment looks impressive), Core i9 scored 93 FPS, while Ryzen 7 reached 90 FPS.
Who should you choose?
As we have said, everything depends on tastes and economic availability. For example, the Intel Core i9-9900K is available in the country at an approximate cost of AR $ 29,000-. It is a CPU that, along with a good video card, plays well with each game, running at a maximum temperature of 60 to 70º (it does not get cooler, so you have to buy an external cooling) and is very effective for those people who want to perform rendering and video editing tasks.
For its part, Ryzen 7 is slightly less performance in this type of task, although to play is very similar to that of Intel, it is cheaper (achieved in Argentina at a cost of AR $ 20,000.-) and includes a factory cooler that keeps the fresh, reaching temperatures between 50 and 70 °.
