Xiaomi is a company that we like, and quite, partly thanks to their good work with the software on their devices and partly thanks to the high quality of the same at the hardware level, a combination with which the company is usually quite successful.
However, it's true that many times we complain about how tough MIUI seems to us as a personalization layer – despite the fact that it's the best Android layer – and that's why we wanted to try ROM with pure Android in one of the top versions of the company China, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S. This is my experience with a special ROM in high bandwidth as a whole since 2018.
Installation, mad thing
Installing the ROM is not the same as it was several years ago, and this change is not that she is present in the process itself, but in the steps ahead, which have some bumps that make it difficult for "risk" to grasp our smartphone for installing a custom ROM.
Without a doubt, blocking the Bootloader makes our phone safer and, if we lose, no one can use it without entering our MIUI account, but it's a double-edged sword. In fact, on many occasions we have no choice but to unblock it because of certain disagreements of the company in its beta system. In fact, everything that started there, with the inability to move from the beta version of the MIUI 10 to the stable length, no more or less, than the presence of Android P in the beta.
The Bootloader opening process has not changed much compared to a few years ago, we continue to use our own Xiaomi program for which we need to have an account associated with the terminal. But with the inconvenience that Xiaomi can force you to wait a month in hours – or a week to start the process. A month in which, of course, you can not change the MIUI account of the terminal, which will reboot this account again. Authentic chaos.
Similar performance, but much worse experience with gestures
For a week I had in my Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S custom ROM on Android 9.0 which allowed me to enjoy the latest version of the operating system in a completely different way as I normally do in the terminal.
And, as you know, MIUI fully covers Android stock experience, and although the latest version of the layer is very close to aesthetics and lines published by Google this year, it's still not the same. Although, as you can see, it is almost better than that.
The performance of Android 9.0 completely clean was a real pleasure, and the fact is that even though MIUI 10 can finally achieve tremendous performance in Xiaomi, the experience with a completely clean layer is better due to the "impulse" that the terminal seems to have with free software from Xiaomi applications and services.
However, all this experience is very impoverished with the "gestures" of Android P. And I quote the words gestures, because the truth is that it's a navigation system exactly the same as for some years now, we're looking at Android, with particularity we can slide the start button to display multitasking. No more
Without a doubt, this is one of the parts in which Google has failed to live up to some Android manufacturers such as OnePlus or Xiaomi, whose gesture system is excellent at the operational level, and most importantly: it allows us to enjoy a full screen in any application, which is precisely the reason for the navigation gesture system.
The camera decided to return to MIUI
On the other hand, the experience with the camera left us very cold, because, apparently, a custom ROM that does not integrate the software adapted to the sensor – as it is the case – is incapable of using its full potential to shine, and this is one of the biggest obstacles we have today in this regard.
Of course, I installed a Google camera optimized for Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, and the results were very good, even above those of the MIUI camera, as we show you below. GCam achieves a very good interpretation of the color, and the level of detail is slightly higher.
However, the experience is quite the opposite, because in the MIUI camera, photography is simple and fast, and, as if they were not enough, all camera modes work absolutely, with performance by range, which is exactly what we expected.
In GCam, we needed 2 to 7 seconds to get another image because of the slowdown of HDR + processing, which, although greatly enhances the photos, also causes some slowness, which in some situations is very inadequate. If you use a Google camera, you can forget about taking 3 shots fast.
