Dogs in the Western Rand are encouraged to immediately vaccinate their dogs against the Distemper virus.

The warning comes after Tshwane SPCA confirmed they are fighting a potentially serious phenomenon of Cain Distepper at their Walloon branch on Wednesday, January 23.

According to the official website of Tshwane SPCA [https://spcapta.org.za/] "Distemper is a serious virus in the air that is rapidly spreading and there is no cure. Symptoms often require time to manifest, and dogs may initially look healthy, only to get sick later." The first signs of Distemper include sneezing, coughing and a dense mucous membrane from the eyes and nose. Fever, lethargy, sudden vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite are also common symptoms of the virus. "

Dr Elizan God, business unit manager, Companion Animals and Ethicals at Afrivet, issued a statement earlier this week, saying: "The owners of dogs should know that because the pain is a viral disease and the animal's immune system must fight Without it, the veterinarians only provide support for treatment after the dog is diagnosed as being in need of contamination. About 50 per cent of adult dogs and 80 per cent of puppies will succumb to the disease Vaccination is the only way to prevent the disease. "

Lorica Boschoff, president of the Rand West SPCA, added: "This is a very dangerous virus among dogs, so we urge people to take their dogs for vaccination as a precautionary measure. People should take their dogs to their local veterinary clinics because we do not make vaccinations. "

The Herald has since spoken to Dr Dorel du Plessis from the Culemborg Park's veterinarian parking clinic for the virus:
