Several routes were frozen, as dense tires blocked streets in the area.

According to police spokesman Captain Kay Mahabella, the reason for the protests was unknown. He advised drivers to be careful and avoid the area.

"Police members were deployed to contain the protests," Mr Mahabella told News24 on Thursday morning.

According to unconfirmed social media reports, protests were caused by anger over people who "occupied" houses in the area.

According to drivers' reports in the area, the affected areas include Buitenkant, Church, WF Nkomo and Mitchell, among others.
