Vlaamse Opera presents SATYAGRAHA Philip Glass

Vlaamse Opera presents SATYAGRAHA Philip Glass

Satyagraha, Philip Glass, comes to the Vlaamse Opera later this month. The opera is to open on Sunday, November 18, 2018 and close on December 2, 2018.

Satyagraha is performed in Sanskrit with Dutch surtites.

Although Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948) is associated primarily with the history of India, Satyagraha focuses on years spent as a young lawyer in South Africa, from 1893 to 1914. The opera presents the development of his satyagraha philosophy (Sanskrit for "the power of truth"), which guided his concept of political struggle through active, loving and violent resistance. Gandhi's fights and triumphs are linked to the past, present and future, celebrating the lasting effects of human goodness.

The opera, which premiered in 1980, was the first opera by Philip Glass created for the "traditional" operatic forces. The text comes from the Bhagavad Gita, the Hindu sacred central text to Gandhi's worldview, and the opera is sung in Sanskrit. Presentation of "Satyagraha" by LA Opera marks the end of Philip Glass's "portrait trilogy" of operas with strong thinkers who changed the world by following Einstein on the beach (2013) and Akhnaten (2016).
