Every three seconds someone dies of hypertension, and it is estimated that between 44 and 46 per cent of South Africans over 15 years of age have high blood pressure.
Surprising though this percentage may be, it's even worse that only about 50 percent of those affected by high blood pressure are aware of it.
This May, to make your health a priority and to check your blood pressure for free, thanks to the May Measurement Month campaign, organized by the International Society of Hypertension (ISH), South African Hypertension Association, Servier, National Department for Health, Dis-Hem, Novartis, Omron and MSD.
ISH President Professor Alta Shute said: "In South Africa, almost one in every two adults has hypertension. It is even more alarming that about 70 per cent of adults in sub-Saharan Africa with hypertension are unaware of high blood pressure."
Schutte is also director of the Department of Medical Research of South Africa for Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease at the Northwest University.
A simple blood pressure test that measures the pressure in your arteries as heart pumps can tell you if you have a cause for concern.
"Over the past two years, May Measurement Month has been the world's largest ever screening campaign for every risk factor, testing over 2.7 million people." This highlights the importance of elevated blood pressure as the leading risk factor for death in the world. In 2019, we hope that we will achieve much larger numbers, "Shute said.
"All the information collected from the national projections is entered into a national database. We will use the collected data to evaluate and find out more about the problem of high blood pressure. All data we collect is totally anonymous.
"The next important step is to use these results to ensure global and local policy changes, where governments are actively taking this risk factor seriously and ensuring proper and systematic control of blood pressure."
