Hawks confirmed the arrest of five men in Johannesburg who reportedly abducted three teenagers from Ethiopia.
The group was arrested in Mayfair and Brickston areas on Thursday after demanding the ransom of R150,000 from the teen's parents.
"The three teenagers were allegedly smuggled into the country and kept in Gauteng. Their parents based in the Northwest were then allegedly contacted with ransom claims of 50,000 rounds per child for their release, "said Captain Lloyd Ramova.
He said the five arrested were also Ethiopian nationals.
They are expected to be charged with human trafficking, kidnapping and extortion. He cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges pending their appearance in court.
The teens were taken to safety while investigations continue.
