JOHANNESBURG – Eight men who were involved in a trade union robbed 11 banks in one year in Mpumalanga and Gauteng were sentenced to life in prison.

Eight men were convicted in the High Court in Pretoria after a two-year trial.

Hawks welcomed the verdict.

A spokesman for Hangwani Mulaudzi says it is an important sentence.

"We have also added a life racket for racketeering, which is revolutionary and we believe this will send a strong message to other unions, but at the same time it will strengthen our research in dealing with all these unions."
